Solution

Dear Student,

Physical properties of Metals:
*they are lustrous - Shiny in appearance.
*they are malleable - They can be drawn into thin sheets.
*they are ductile - They can be formed into wires.
*they are sonorous - They produce sound when they are hit. Exception: mercury.
*they are good conductors of heat and electricity
* they are solid at room temperature - Mercury is an exception as it is a liquid at room temperature.

Chemical properties of Metals:

i. They form positive ions

ii. They form basic oxides and hydroxides

iii. They react with oxygen present in the atmosphere to form oxides and for iron, it corrodes.

iv. They form metallic bonds

v. The reaction of metals with water/steam: Metals react with water to form hydrogen gas and corresponding oxide or hydroxide. However, Gold, silver, tin, lead, copper and platinum do not react with water.
2Na + H2O → 2NaOH + H2
Mg + H2O → MgO + H2

vi. Metal reaction with acids: Metals react with acids to form metal salt and hydrogen gas.
2M + 2HX → 2MX + H2 (M: metal, X:anion)
