Question

What are the 10 stages of meiosis?

Open in App
Solution

Meiosis:

  1. It is a type of cell division in sexually reproducing organisms that produce the gametes such as sperm or egg cells.
  2. It also reduces the number of chromosomes in gametes.
  3. Meiosis takes place only during sexual reproduction.

Ten stages of meiosis:

  1. Interphase: It is a part of the preparation that involves doubling the number of chromosomes that the cell contains
  2. Prophase I: It is the recombination of genetic material between non-sister chromatids.
  3. Metaphase I: It is the stage of cell division, where the homologous chromosome move to the center of the cell along the equatorial plane.
  4. Anaphase I: In this stage, the homologous chromosome is separated into two groups.
  5. Telophase I: In this stage, chromosomes are enclosed in the nuclei.
  6. Prophase II: It is the first step of meiosis, beginning with the two daughter cells produced by the first meiotic division.
  7. Metaphase II: In this stage, the chromosomes are aligned at the center of the cell.
  8. Anaphase II: In this stage, the chromatids split at the centromere.
  9. Telophase II: This phase ends up forming two identical daughter cells.
  10. Cytokinesis: In this phase, the chromosome uncoil and forms chromatid again.
