Blood clotting:

  1. It is a crucial process that controls excessive bleeding when any blood vessel is injured.
  2. Platelets and proteins in plasma together help to stop the bleeding by forming a clot over the injury.

Functions of blood clotting factors:

  1. Coagulation factors or proteins in the blood help to control bleeding from our tissues.
  2. We have different coagulation factors in our blood.
  3. It helps in avoiding the loss of too much blood.
  4. It converts blood into a gel-like substance to stop bleeding.

Types of blood clotting factors:

  1. Fibrinogen
  2. Prothrombin
  3. Thrombokinase (tissue factor)
  4. Ionized calcium ( Ca++ )
  5. Labile factor
  6. Leiden thrombophilia
  7. Stable factor
  8. Antihemophilic factor
  9. Christmas factor
  10. Plasma thromboplastin antecedent,
  11. Stuart-Prower factor
  12. Plasma thromboplastin antecedent
  13. Hageman factor
  14. Fibrin-stabilizing factor

Note: Leiden thrombophilia is the 6th factor. It is no longer used as a blood clotting factor.
