Slime molds:

  1. Slime mold is a term used to describe a collection of unrelated eukaryotic organisms that can survive as single cells but can also join to form multicellular reproductive structures.
  2. Slime molds were originally classified as fungi, however they are no longer classified as such.
  3. Slime molds are a strange collection of creatures that have been classed as animals, fungi, and plants in the past. Slime molds, like plants, have cellulose in their spore cell walls. Slime molds, unlike plants, are heterotrophs.
  4. There are two types of slime molds : Cellular and acellular

Cellular slime molds:

  1. In the soil, cellular slime molds are eukaryotic microorganisms. As solitary amoebae, they feed on bacteria, but conditionally build multicellular forms in which cell differentiation occurs.
  2. Slime molds feature both mold and protozoa properties. Slime molds, like amoebae, exist as masses of cytoplasm under particular circumstances. It eats through phagocytosis and moves across decaying wood or leaves. The plasmodium is the amoeba stage with the most nuclei.

Acellular slime molds:

  1. When plasmodium dries, it produces stalked fruiting bodies with sporangia. Meiosis produces haploid spores in sporangia. They have a strong cell wall and are resistant to a wide range of environmental factors. These spores germinate to generate haploid cells in favorable circumstances.
  2. As a gamete, these haploid cells are used. Depending on the amount of moisture available, different types of cells develop.
  3. Because the diploid zygote does not undergo cytoplasmic division, it experiences numerous mitotic divisions, resulting in a multinucleated plasmodium (cytokinesis)
