Carbohydrates:

  1. Carbohydrates are sugar molecules and one of the main constituent of food along with proteins and fats.
  2. Carbohydrates break down into simpler forms to provide energy.
  3. On the basis of number of sugar molecules carbohydrates are of three types:
  • Monosaccharides:
  1. Monosaccharides are the simplest form of carbohydrates and these are usually six carbon molecule compounds.
  2. For example glucose, fructose etc.
  • Disaccharides:
  1. They are made up of combination two monosaccharide.
  2. For example sucrose, lactose and maltose.
  • Polysaccharides:
  1. These are made up of more than nine simple sugar molecules.
  2. For example starch, glycogen, and Cellulose.
