Solution

Digestive system:

It is the system which helps in breakdown of food particles into their simpler forms and their absorption into the bloodstream.

It can be of the following types:

  • Monogastric digestive system
  1. Monogastric means the structure of the stomach.
  2. In this the entire digestive system consists of only the stomach as a single compartment.
  3. Various types of species have monogastric digestive system.
  4. For example pigs, horses, rabbits and dogs etc.
  • Ruminant digestive system
  1. Ruminant digestive system is a little more complex than the monogastric digestive system.
  2. The ruminant digestive system consists of four compartments that are the rumen, the reticulum, the omasum and the abomasum.
  3. These compartments helps in the fermentation of food and they produce fatty acids which act as a source of energy.
  4. This type of digestive system is found in giraffes, cows, deer, sheep, and goats.
  • Pseudo-ruminant digestive system
  1. This type of digestive system is found only in a few vertebrates that eat a very large amount of fibres.
  2. Their food contain relatively large amount of in digestible carbohydrates such as Cellulose.
  3. In contrast to ruminant digestive system this type of digestive system do not have enough compartments for the proper digestion of food.
  4. This type of digestive system is found in some species of rabbits, guinea pigs, and hamsters.
