Question

What are the three ways in which ATP is generated?

Open in App
Solution

ATP:

  1. ATP stands for adenosine triphosphate and it is the unit of energy.
  2. ATP is synthesized in the mitochondria during cellular respiration.
  3. It is generated in the process of glycolysis in the cytoplasm, during the TCA cycle, and oxidative phosphorylation in the mitochondria.
  4. Process of ATP generation:
  • Glycolysis:
  1. It is the metabolic pathway in which glucose is converted into pyruvic acid after various chemical reactions.
  2. The energy released during these chemical reactions is stored in the form of ATP and NADPH.
  3. A total of 10 reactions occur in the process of glycolysis and various enzymes are also involved.
  • TCA cycle:
  1. It is also known as the Krebs cycle or the citric acid cycle.
  2. It is the main source of energy for cells and it is also an important part of aerobic respiration.
  • Oxidative phosphorylation:
  1. It is the process that occurs in mitochondria.
  2. ATP is synthesized via the movement of electrons across the mitochondrial cell membrane.
