Question

What are the postulates of kinetic molecular theory?

Open in App
Solution

The postulates of the kinetic molecular theory of gases are:

  1. Gas is composed of a large number of particles, which are in constant random motion.
  2. There is no intermolecular force of attraction between gas molecules or between the gas molecules and the walls of the container.
  3. The particles of gas move in a straight line unit they collide with each other or with the walls of the container.
  4. Intermolecular collisions are perfectly elastic. Therefore the average kinetic energy of the molecules is constant.
  5. The average kinetic energy of the gas molecules depends only on the temperature of the gas.
  6. The volume of an individual particle is considered negligible as compared to the total volume.
