Question

What are the 4 metabolic pathways?

Open in App
Solution

Metabolic reactions:

  1. It is a set of chemical reactions that occur in the body of a living organism.
  2. It can be either catabolic energy-releasing or anabolic in nature.

Metabolic pathways:

  1. It is a series of chemical reactions that are linked together such that the product of one reaction is the substrate for the other.
  2. These reactions occur in the living cells.

Major metabolic pathways:

Major metabolic pathways include

  • Glycolysis: It takes place in the cytoplasm of both prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells.
  1. In this process, glucose is broken down and two molecules of pyruvate, ATP NADH, and water are produced.
  2. It occurs in both aerobic and anaerobic respiration
  • Krebs's cycle: It occurs only during aerobic respiration.
  1. It takes place in the matrix of mitochondria.
  2. NADH and carbon dioxide are the products of this metabolic pathway.
  • Pentose phosphate pathway: It takes place in the cytosol of a cell. It generates NADPH and ribose-5-phosphate sugar.
  • Oxidative phosphorylation: In this, the movement of electrons through the electron transport chain is utilized to produce ATP. It takes place in mitochondria of a cell.
