Question

What are the four types of crystalline solids?

Open in App
Solution

Crystalline solids

Crystalline solids are solids which have regular ordered arrangement of components held together by uniform intermolecular forces.

The four types of crystalline solids are:

Ionic solids

  1. Solids composed of cations and anions hold together by electrostatic force.
  2. Eg: Any metal and non metal bonds,NaCl,CuO

Molecular solids

  1. Solids composed of discrete molecules held together by electrostatic force.
  2. Eg: When non-metal freezes into solids H2O,I2,C3H7OH

Network covalent solids

  1. Solids composed of atoms covalently bonded into layers of two-dimensional networks or into a three-dimensional network.
  2. Eg: Only includes Diamond(C),Graphite(C),SiO2,WC

Metallic solids

  1. Solids composed to metal cations held together by delocalized valence electrons.
  2. Eg: Any pure metal Na,Fe,Al,Cu
