Question

What are the advantages of ELISA?

Open in App
Solution

Advantages of ELISA (Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay):

  1. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, first described by Eva Engvall and Peter Perlmann in 1971, is a widely used analytical biochemistry experiment.
  2. The assay uses antibodies directed against the protein to be measured to detect the presence of a ligand in a liquid sample using a solid-phase type of enzyme immunoassay.
  3. Compared to other immunoassay procedures, ELISA has a lot of advantages:
    1. It is frequently used due to its excellent sensitivity and specificity.
    2. In comparison to other procedures, such as radioimmunoassay (RIA) testing, ELISA provides more accuracy.
    3. The most common format for ELISA assays is a 96-well microplate. Most ELISA microplates have break apart wells, allowing for smaller runs if necessary. The main benefit is that 96 determinations can be made in a single run, with results usually arriving in less than 3 hours. This is a time-saving and cost-effective method.
    4. ELISA does not need the use of radioisotopes or expensive radiation counters. Accurate micropipettes, an incubator, a washing system, and a microplate spectrophotometer reader are all required.
  4. Many laboratories now employ completely automated ELISA processing equipment.
