Question

What are the advantages of phylogenetic classification?

Open in App
Solution

Phylogenetic classification:

  1. In biology, phylogenetics is a branch of systematics concerned with inferring evolutionary history and relationships between or within groups of organisms (e.g. species, or more inclusive taxa).
  2. Phylogenetic inference methods propose these relationships by evaluating observed heritable features, such as DNA sequences or morphology, within a predefined model of evolution.
  3. Over the Linnaean system, phylogenetic classification has the following advantages:
    1. Phylogenetic categorization informs you something crucial about the organism: its evolutionary history.
    2. It does not aim to place species in any sort of order.
    3. It tells about the biological processes that lead to biological diversity.
