AC can be generated at high voltages, but DC cannot be generated at high voltages because of sparking, due to which the commutator gets damaged.
High voltages AC generators are much simpler and cheaper than DC generators of the same range. This is because in an AC generator there is no commutator.
AC can be easily stepped up or stepped down using a transformer. When the voltage is stepped up, the current decreases. This fact can be utilized to transmit AC over long distances with low transmission losses.
