Buds present on the kalanchoe leaf are called epiphyllous bud. Ephyllous bud formation is a unique mode of vegetative propagation. These buds remain dormant till favourable conditions brought about. Initiation of physical and chemical changes in leaves in response to favourable conditions cause bud release from the dormancy. Then the epiphyllous buds are differentiated by producing roots from the lower side, followed by the stem from an upper side from which pair of leaves originates. So, basically epiphyllous bud help in the formation of a new plant from the bud.
