Question

What are the building blocks of matter?

Open in App
Solution

Atoms are called the building block of matter.

Atom:

  • An atom is composed of positive, negative, and neutral subatomic particles.
  • The particles that are present inside the nucleus are protons and neutrons while the negative particles (electrons) revolve around the nucleus in defined orbits.

Matter:

Anything which has mass and that takes up space is known as matter. The matter is further classified into three states as listed below.

  • Solid
  • Liquid
  • Gas

In solids, the particles are held together by strong attractions due to which solids are rigid and hard.

In liquids, the forces of attraction are weaker than in solids, thus the particles can move freely.

In gases, there are minimal attractions or forces between the particles.

Example: Water exists in all three states of matter- ice, liquid water, and gaseous steam.
