Acid rain can be caused by a chemical reaction that begins when compounds like sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides are released to the air. Theses substances can rise into the atmosphere, where they mix and react with oxygen, water and other chemicals to form acid pollutants, therefor creating acid rain.
