Characteristics of the epidermis:

  1. The epidermis is the outermost layer of the plant body that protects the plant against mechanical injury, infection, water loss, etc.
  2. It is made of a single layer of cells, and the cells are closely packed to each other without any intercellular spaces.
  3. The epidermis is covered by a layer known as the cuticle.
  4. The cuticle is made of a waxy substance called cutin that is secreted by the epidermal cells.
  5. The epidermal cells consist of hair-like structures known as trichomes.
  6. In roots, some parts of the plant are covered by a layer of the epidermis without a cuticle known as epiblema.
  7. The epiblema gives rise to tubular outgrowth known as root hairs.
