Question

What are the characteristics of permittivity?

Open in App
Solution

Dear student,
In the field of electromagnetism, the absolute permittivity, or more commonly known as just permittivity is denoted by the Greek letter ε (epsilon). It has the following characteristics-
1. It is a measure of the electric polarizability of a dielectric material.
2. A material which possesses a high permittivity polarizes more in it's response to an applied electric field than a material possessing low permittivity, consequently storing more energy in the material.
3. In electrostatics, the permittivity has a very significant role in determining the capacitance of a capacitor.
