Solution
Phycomycetes:
They are the lowest class of true fungi.
They include both aquatic as well as terrestrial forms.
They can be saprophytes as well as parasites.
The mycelium in Phycomycetes is coenocytic i.e., aseptate and multinucleate.
The wall of hyphae is made of cellulose.
Asexual reproduction takes place through the formation of sporangia.
Sexual reproduction takes place through gametangial contact where the male gamete is transferred from the antheridium to the oogonium.
The gametes are of non-flagellated type.
An oospore is produced at the end of sexual reproduction.
Hence, Phycomycetes are also called oomycetes.
Examples of Phycomycetes include
Mucor
,
Rhizopus
, etc.
