What are the characteristics of pteridophytes?

Pteridophytes:

  1. They are known by the name ferns.
  2. They are seedless and vascular plants that are found in tropic and temperate areas.
  3. The plant body is divided into stem, roots, and leaves and is a sporophyte in nature.
  4. The stem is of underground rhizome type.
  5. Vegetative reproduction is caused by fragmentation.
  6. The undersurface of the leaves has sporangia arranged in clusters.
  7. Mostly the pteridophyte are homosporous i.e. they produce only one type of spore and some are heterosporous i.e. produce only two types of spores.
  8. Sexual reproduction is oogamous in nature.
  9. Alternation of generations is seen in the life cycle of the pteridophytes.
  10. Examples include Selaginella, Equisetum, Salvinia, etc.
