Solution
Salts:
Water molecules are polarised, with a negative (oxygen) and a positive side (hydrogen).
The ionic connections that hold the sodium and chlorine in the salt together are broken by polarised water.
When the water evaporates, the two elements recombine to create crystals.
Characteristics of salts:
The salt crystals dissolve in water.
Salt crystallises into a white powder.
In the isometric system, the salt crystallises into cubes.
