Question

What are the characteristics of vibrations?

Open in App
Solution

  1. Vibrations have mainly three characteristics: amplitude, frequency, and time period.
  2. The extent of vibration from the mean position is called the amplitude.
  3. Amplitude can also be measured as the height of crest or depth of trough in the wave representation of sound.
  4. High amplitude corresponds to a louder sound and low amplitude corresponds to a soft sound.
  5. Frequency is defined as the number of vibrations completed in one second.
  6. The S.I. units of frequency are hertz (Hz).
  7. Time period is the time taken to complete one vibration.
  8. If T is the time period of any wave, then the number of vibrations in one second will be 1Twhich is equal to frequency.
  9. So f=1TorT=1f
  10. Thus, frequency and time period are reciprocal to each other.
