Solution

Dear Student,

The limbic system consists of various components, given as below:
  1. Thalamus: The function of the thalamus is to process and relay movement and sensory information. It also regulates the sleeping and wakefulness states.
  2. Hypothalamus: Hypothalamus regulates the functioning of the autonomic nervous system by the release and production of chemical messengers, known as hormones. These hormones regulate the blood pressure, heart rate, hunger, thirst, sleep cycle and body temperature.
  3. Amygdala: It plays a major role in the regulation of anxiety, fear, aggression, emotional memory and social cognition.
  4. Hippocampus: It is responsible for converting short-term memories to long-term memories.
  5. Basal ganglia: Basal ganglia is responsible for maintaining posture, movement, and equilibrium of the body.
  6. Limbic cortex
    • Cingulate gyrus: It serves as the pathway that transmits information between the inner and outer portions of the limbic system. It regulates the autonomic functions such as blood pressure, heart rate, etc.
    • Parahippocampal gyrus: It plays an important role in spatial memory.
