What are the conditions for an Algebraic expression to be called as polynomial?

For an Algebraic expression to become a Polynomial , it must contain variables (also known as indeterminates) whose values are unknown or not specified.
Take an example:
A simply expression : 2 + 3 is an algebraic expression but not a polynomial
Now: 2x + 3 is a polynomial bacuase it contains the variable x .
