Question

What are the conditions for the formation of an electrovalent bond?

Open in App
Solution

Conditions for the formation of an electrovalent bond:

(1) Low ionisation energy of an electropositive atom: The lower the ionisation energy of an atom, the higher will be its ability to lose an electron to form a cation.

(2) High electron affinity of an electronegative atom: The higher the electron affinity of an electronegative atom, the higher will be its ability to form an anion.

(3) Large electronegativity difference: The higher the electronegativity difference between the two combining elements, the easier will be the transfer of electrons. Hence, the electrovalent bond will be formed easily.

(4) High lattice energy of the compound formed: The greater the lattice energy, the higher is the stability of the compound. Thus, the electrovalent bond is formed with much ease.
