Air is passed over the red-hot carbonaceous fuel and carbon monoxide is produced which is called producer or suction gas. The reaction is exothermic and proceeds as follows:

$2 C_{(s)} + O_{2} (g) + 4 N_{2 (g)} 1273 K - --- \to 2 C O_{(g)} + 4 N_{2 (g)}      P r o d u c e r G a s$

While the mixture of $C O + H_{2}$ is called water gas and if $C O + H_{2}$ contains traces of carbon dioxide $C O_{2}$ then it is called syngas.
