Neural crests:

1. They are a group of temporary cells.
2. They are unique to vertebrates and arise from the embryonic ectoderm germ layer.
3. They rise to a variety of cell lineage which includes melanocytes, craniofacial cartilage and bone, smooth muscle, peripheral and enteric neurons, and glia.
4. The derivatives of the neural crest are ectomesenchyme, endocrine cells, cells of the peripheral nervous system, and enteric cells.

Ectomesenchyme:

They include connective tissue of head and neck glands, dermis and adipose tissue of calvaria, and ventral neck and face.

Endocrine cells:

These include chromaffin cells of the adrenal medulla.

Peripheral nervous system:

These include sensory neurons and glia of the dorsal root ganglia.

Enteric cells:

Enteric cells include enterochromaffin cells.
