Thorns and prickles perform the same function of defence against herbivores but the only difference comes up in them is their origin.
Thorns are the modification of stem and formed by axillary buds and are strong in nature as seen Bougainvillea while prickles originate from the epidermis of bark as seen is roses and can be broken down easily.
