What are the differences between a virtual image and a real image?

Open in App
Solution

Images are formed when reflected rays meet or appear to meet. There are two types of images- real and virtual.

Differences between a real and a virtual image are as follows:
  • If the reflected rays actually meet at a point, then the image formed is a real image.
  • If the reflected rays appear to meet at a point then the image formed is a virtual image.
  • Real images are always inverted and virtual images are always erect. An inverted image is an upside-down image.
  • Real images can be obtained on a screen but virtual images cannot be obtained on a screen.
