Laws of chemical combination:

The formation of compounds by combining two or more elements is formulated by the four fundamental laws called laws of chemical combination. The four laws are:

  1. Law of conservation of mass
  2. Law of constant or definite proportions
  3. Law of multiple proportions
  4. Law of reciprocal proportions

Definition of these laws:

  1. Law of conservation of mass: The law was given by the chemist Antoine L. Lavoisier. He stated that the mass cannot be formed, not destroyed. It can only get converted from one form to another.
  2. Law of constant or definite proportions: The law states that when a compound is formed by the combination of two or more elements, the mass of each component is fixed in the compound.
  3. Law of multiple proportions: According to the law, when two or more elements unite to form more than one compound, the mass of the elements present in the compound will always be ratios of the whole numbers.
  4. Law of reciprocal proportions: The law was formulated by Jeremias Richter. It states that if two elements combine to form a compound AB and another compound BC, the ratio of the elements in compound AC can be determined.
