Colloidal solutions are kept in parchment bag and dipped in a beaker containing water, so that the impurities pass into the aqueous medium, leaving the colloid particles in the bag. The aqueous solution is renewed with time, so that the impurities do not rediffuse into the parchment bag. Pure colloidal solution is left inside the parchment bag. This is the process of dialysis.
Normal filter paper cannot be used to filter out colloidal particles, as the pore size in normal filter papers are same as the colloid particles. Thus solutes are separated from the colloidal solution using ultra filter paper, where the pore size is small as compared to ordinary filter paper. This method is known as ultra filtration.
