Question

What are the different methods of separating a mixtue of two solids

Open in App
Solution

Different separation techniques are present depending on the property of the substance to be separated

Handpicking

  • To separate solid-solid mixture which is less in quantity, we can take handpicking method
  • If we take the mixture of rice and stones, which differ by the color, size, and the quantity, we can separate the components using the handpicking method
  • The components which present in less quantity can be separated easily by picking using a hand

Sieving method

  • Particles having different sizes can be separated by this technique
  • Since the particles which are large remain above the sieve and particles having small size will pass through the sieves can be collected on another beaker and separated
  • This can be applied if the solid mixtures differ in size

Winnowing

  • This technique is usually used to separate the husk from the grains
  • Workers usually drop the mixture slowly from a height by constantly shaking the plate which carries the mixture, lighter particles will fall far away and the heavier particles fall near the person

To separate solid-solid mixture, we can use these techniques handpicking, sieving, winnowing
