Endoplasmic reticulum:

The Endoplasmic reticulum is a membrane-bound cell organelle that is made up of a complex network of tubes and is located in the cytoplasm of the eukaryotic cell. It is of two types namely -

  1. Rough endoplasmic reticulum: It is a series of connected flattened sac-like structures that are embedded with ribosomes on its outer surface that give it a rough appearance. The function of the rough endoplasmic reticulum is the synthesis and secretion of proteins, hormones, and other substances.
  2. Smooth endoplasmic reticulum: It is a tubular structure that does not consist of ribosomes that give it a smooth appearance. The function of the smooth endoplasmic reticulum is the transportation of products secreted by the rough endoplasmic reticulum to other cell organelles.
