Freshwater: This includes the resources of water that have nil or a very low quantity of dissolved salts. This mainly includes lakes, ponds, and rivers.

There are different forms of freshwater resources such as-

  1. Rainwater - It is the water that percolates into the ground. Rainfall or precipitation brings three trillion m3 of water to India. Its severity varies depending on the zone, thus zones are classed accordingly as
    1. Wet zone
    2. Intermediate zone
    3. Semi-arid zone
    4. Arid zone
  2. Surface water - Surface water flows through 14 major river systems in India, including the Ganga, Godavari, Bahmani, Kavery, and Brahmaputra.
  3. Groundwater - Water that percolates into the ground through the soil's air gaps.
