Dear Student,
Friction is an opposing force which comes into play when an object moves or tries to move over the surface of another object. Friction is classified into three types:
1. Static friction
2. Kinetic friction
3. Fluid friction
Kinetic friction is again of two types:
a. Sliding friction
b. Rolling friction
1. Static friction: It is the frictional force acting on a body resting on a surface. Static friction is also called adjustable force which can take any value from 0 to the value of the applied force which can just move the body with zero acceleration.
2. Kinetic friction: It is the frictional force acting on a body which is moving on a surface. Its value is always less than the value of static friction.
a. Sliding friction: It is the frictional force acting on a body sliding on a rough surface.
b.Rolling friction: It is the frictional force acting on a body rolling on a rough surface.
3. Fluid friction: The frictional force exerted by fluids is called fluid friction. It is the friction between the layers within a viscous fluid that are moving relative to each other.
