Question

What are the different types of gas exchange systems in animals?

Open in App
Solution

Gas exchange systems in animals:

  1. In animals, gas exchange follows the same general pattern that occurs in plants.
  2. Oxygen and carbon dioxide move through diffusion into the moist membrane.
  3. In simple animals, the exchange is mainly with the environment.
  4. But with complex animals, such as mammals, there is an exchange between the environment and blood.

Types of gas exchange systems in animals:

Skin:

  1. Just below the epidermis, a complex network of capillaries allows for the exchange of gases between the circulatory system and the outside environment.
  2. The respiratory surface needs to be kept moist to allow gases to dissolve and spread throughout the cell membrane.

Tracheal system:

  1. All parts of the tracheal system allow oxygen to enter tissues and carbon dioxide.
  2. However, most gases are exchanged in the small trachea and trachea because they are parts of the system in close contact with cells.

Giles:

  1. Fish exchange gas by drawing oxygenated water through their mouths and pumping it over their gills.

Lungs:

  1. Some birds, like mammals in general, have lungs, which are primarily specialized organs for gas exchange.
  2. Oxygenated air, taken in during inhalation, circulates in the bloodstream on the surface of the lungs, and carbon dioxide is expelled from the blood into the lungs and exhaled during exhalation.
