Question

What are the different types of Intermolecular Forces?

Open in App
Solution

Intermolecular forces:

  • Intermolecular forces are the forces of attraction between molecules, ions, and atoms interacting with each other.
  • Intermolecular forces are categorized into many types that are discussed below.

Types of Intermolecular forces:

1. Hydrogen bonding:

  • It is a type of dipole-dipole interaction.
  • A bond is formed considering the electronegativity difference between hydrogen and another atom.

2. London dispersion forces:

  • These types of forces are formed due to the formation of temporary dipole due to the movement in electron density between molecules.
  • London dispersion forces can also be known as induced dipole-dipole interactions.

3. Dipole-dipole forces:

  • Dipole-dipole forces are the strongest intermolceular forces.
  • They are formed due to electrostatic interactions between two or more dipoles.

4. Dipole-induced dipole forces:

  • These forces arise due to the interaction between an uncharged atom or molecules with a dipole.
  • The interaction with the dipole induces the formation of a dipole in the uncharged particles.
