Meristematic tissues

  1. A group of cells that are continuously carrying out the process of cell division.

Classification

Based on its position, the meristem is divided into three types:

1. Apical meristems

  1. Apical meristems are the type of meristematic cells found at the tips of roots, stems, and branches.
  2. It is responsible for the increase in length of the plant and thus helps in the primary growth of the plant.

2. Intercalary meristems

  1. Intercalary meristems are the type of meristems that are present in the nodal region.
  2. These meristems are found in monocotyledons such as grasses.
  3. They are present in between the permanent tissues.
  4. They are derived from the apical meristem.
  5. The main function of intercalary meristems is to increase the length of internodes.

3. Lateral meristems

  1. Lateral meristem is present along the longitudinal axis of stem and root.
  2. Examples of lateral meristem are Vascular cambium and cork cambium.
  3. They help in increasing the thickness of the stem and root.
