Descending paper chromatography- In this case the chromatogram is developed by allowing the solvent to travel down the paper.

Ascending paper chromatography- In this case, the chromatogram is developed by allowing the solvent to travel up the paper.

Ascending-Descending paper chromatography- It is a mixture of both the above mentioned types.

Radial Paper chromatography- In this type of chromatography, the sample is placed at the centre of a filter paper. The filter paper is then kept horizontally on a petridish containing the solvent. The solvent then rises up the wick of the paper (which is dipped into the solvent), and the different components get separated in form of concentrated circles.

Two dimensional Chromatography- A square or rectangular filter paper is used and the sample is kept at one of the corners.
