Pollutants: These are toxic contaminants that pollute the medium in which they are present.
There are two different types of pollutants that are as follows:
Biodegradable pollutants: Those pollutants which decompose rapidly under natural conditions are known as biodegradable pollutants. Example– domestic wastes. Their accumulation creates problems in hygiene and sanity and leads to various diseases. It also causes a bad odor.
Non-biodegradable pollutants: Those materials that do not degrade or degrade very slowly in nature, e.g. aluminum cans, mercuric salts, glass pieces, D.D.T., etc. They are not recycled in nature.
