Solution
There are two ways in which glucose is oxidised to provide energy in various organisms
Aerobic respiration - Oxidation of glucose in presence of oxygen. It involves the complete oxidation of glucose into carbon dioxide and water. A considerable amount of energy (38 ATPs) is released in this process. For example - most animals and plants carry out aerobic respiration.
Anaerobic respiration - Oxidation of glucose in absence of oxygen. It may be of two types:
(a). Anaerobic respiration in yeast: The glucose is partially oxidised to form ethanol and carbon dioxide to release energy,
(b). Anaerobic respiration in muscle cells: The glucose is partially oxidised to form lactic acid and release energy.
