Question
What are the effects of mutations on proteins?
Open in App
Solution
Mutation:
Gene variations (also known as mutations) disrupt the function of one or more proteins.
Unique variations in an organism can be introduced by individual mutations that modify gene activity or protein function.
A mutation can cause a protein to malfunction or not be created at all by altering the code for generating it in a gene.
It can be so severe that the absence of required protein make it impossible for an embryo to survive until it is born.
Single gene variants can cause sickle cell disease and cystic fibrosis.
