  1. Increased yield: To enhance the crop productivity per acre.
  2. Enhancement in crop quality:
  • The quality of products obtained from crops varies from crop to crop.
  • For example, pulses should have better protein quality, oilseeds should have better oil quality, and fruits and vegetables should have good preserving quality.
  1. Resistance against biotic and abiotic factors:
  • Biotic factors include diseases, pests, weeds, and nematodes, whereas abiotic factors include water logging, drought, salinity, etc.
  • All of these factors have an impact on crop productivity. Crop production can be increased by developing resistant varieties to these factors.
  1. Greater adaptability: Crops with wider adaptability are able to be developed in a variety of climates and locations.
