Solution

Instructions:
  • Explain the factors influencing the development of rural settlements.
  • Explain the types of rural settlements.
Solution:
  • Rural settlements are predominantly located near water bodies such as rivers, lakes, and springs where water can be easily available.
  • People choose to settle near fertile lands suitable for agriculture, along with the provision of other basic needs.
  • Factors influencing rural settlement are the nature of the topography, local weather conditions, soil and water resources, social organisations and economic conditions.
Types of rural settlements:
  • Linear settlements: Houses are arranged along either side of a road, railway line, river, etc. This type of settlement is seen in the Himalayas, the Alps, and the Rockies.
  • Rectangular settlements: The rectangular settlements are almost straight, meeting at right angles. Such settlements are found in plains or intermontane plains. In India, this type of settlement is seen in the Sutlej plain.
  • Circular settlement: Houses built around a central area are known as a circular pattern of settlements. Such settlements develop around lakes and tanks.
