The key factors responsible for soil formation are-
Parent rock-The formation of the soil starts with weathering of rocks which is the breaking up and decay of rocks, by temperature changes, plants, animals, etc. This weathered rock material forms parent rock. Parent rock determines colors, chemical properties, mineral content etc. of soil.
Climate-This is one of the key factors in soil formation because it influences the weathering rate of the parent rock.
Flora and fauna:- Presence of flora and fauna play an important role in soil formation. Flora and fauna affect the rate of humus formation which increase the nutrient content of soil and thereby increasing the fertility.
Relief-relief features, especially altitude and slope have a major role in determining accumulation of soil.
time-The formation of soil is not a one day process but takes several years of formation. Younger soils have similar characteristics to their parent material, but as they mature the addition of organic matter exposure, and other environmental factors can change their characteristics.
