Open in App
Solution

Endoplasmic reticulum:

  1. It is an organelle found in eukaryotic cells.
  2. It is a continuous interconnected membrane system that forms a series of flattened sacs within the cytoplasm of eukaryotic cells and serves multiple functions.
  3. There are two types of the endoplasmic reticulum. One is the smooth endoplasmic reticulum and another is the rough endoplasmic reticulum.

Functions of endoplasmic reticulum:

  1. It is responsible for transport. It serves as a channel for the transport of materials like proteins, and carbohydrates between the various region of the cytoplasm or between the cytoplasm and the nucleus.
  2. It supports the skeletal framework of the cell.
  3. It functions as a cytoplasmic framework providing a surface for some biochemical activities of the cell.
  4. The smooth endoplasmic reticulum helps in detoxifying many poisons and drugs.
  5. The rough endoplasmic reticulum helps in the transport of proteins.
