Question

What are the functions of heterochromatin and euchromatin?

Open in App
Solution

Heterochromatin:

  1. Heterochromatin, often known as condensed DNA or densely packed DNA, has many different types.
  2. Eukaryotic genomes contain heterochromatin, which serves a variety of purposes including regulating gene expression and preventing DNA replication and repair.
  3. Heterochromatin in the nucleus physically separates from euchromatin and is preferentially localized to the nuclear periphery and region around the nucleolus.

Euchromatin:

Euchromatin is a type of chromatin (DNA, RNA, and protein) that is densely packed with genes and is frequently (but not always) subject to active transcription.

Functions:

  1. The region of chromatin engaged in the active transcription of DNA into mRNA is known as euchromatin.
  2. Transcription can begin as euchromatin is more open to facilitating the recruitment of RNA polymerase complexes and gene regulatory proteins.
