Seed coat

  • The outermost layer of the seed is known as a seed coat.
  • The outer part of the seed coat is known as Tesla
  • Testa is a brownish hard layer that protects the seed from injuries, insects, bacterial and fungal attacks.
  • The inner part is a thin layer known as Tegman, it also protects the seed.

Micropyle

  • A small pore situated near the hilum is called the micropyle.
  • It is the opening point from which the pollen tubes enter the ovule.
  • The water in the seed is mostly absorbed with the help of the micropyle
  • For the growing embryo, it also helps in the diffusion of respiratory gases.

Cotyledons

  • The cotyledons are also known as seed leaves.
  • The cotyledons store the food in them
  • The food absorbed in the cotyledons is rich in starch.
  • The outer layer of the cotyledon is rich in protein.

Radicle

  • It is the part of the embryo.
  • The radicle later converts into the roots.

Plumule

  • It is the part of the embryo in the seed.
  • The plumule later becomes the shoot.
