1. The functions of the respective structures are as follows:
Ribs – The intercostal muscles stretch between the ribs which causes its outward and inward movement which enlarges the chest cavity all around.
2. Diaphragm – The diaphragm flattens from the dome-shaped outline to an almost horizontal plane upon contraction.
3. Abdominal muscles – it helps to increase the size of the thoracic cavity through the motion of the diaphragm which assists in inspiration.
