Solution

Fossil fuels :

They are non-renewable sources of energy that were formed millions of years ago from the degradation of plant and animal remains buried deep inside the earth.

Harmful effects of the release of an excessive amount of carbon dioxide by the burning of fossil fuels:

  1. fossil fuels consist of biomass, which is formed of carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, and sulfur. When these fuels are burnt, they produce toxic compounds like carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, oxides of nitrogen, and oxides of sulfur.
  2. An excessive quantity of carbon dioxide gas is released when fossil fuels are burnt. It is a greenhouse gas and if present at high levels in the air, it contributes to global warming.
  3. Global warming is a serious environmental problem that may result in the melting of polar ice caps, flooding of low-lying areas, and a rise in sea levels.
